Evaluation and concession of computation projects
Important information when it comes to requesting a project
This document as its goal informing users of the guidelines defined at the Center for Scientific Computing for the evaluation and concession of Computation Projects.
These rules and guidelines may vary if deemed appropriate, always with the goal of easing the access to the Center for Scientific Computing's resources and favouring their exploitation.
Calls and evaluations
Computation Projects can be requested any time during the year.
Computation Projects requests will be evaluated by the Scientific Commission.
Rules for the submission of requests
- Every project's content must be of a scientific research nature.
- Any PhD. belonging to the UAM may be the researcher in charge of a project. However, during the project's evaluation the scientific career of the researcher in charge and their relation with the UAM will be assessed.
- El número de personas vinculadas a un proyecto no está limitado.
- The length of a computation project will be at most one year.
- The starting date of a scientific project will coincide with its concession date had no other date been specified.
The termination date of the project is the date estimated for the project to be concluded. At said date the project will be closed, with the possibility of a brief extension to conclude the research upon request.
- Project's requests must include a real estimation of the computational resources required for the tasks to be developed in said project. Time requests for the requested computation project will be broken down between the different
computation machines at the Center for Scientific Computing and the different types of batch queues defined, based on the required computational resources.
- Computation projects developed in collaboration with a private compay must be stated so in the request petition.
- Regarding a positive evaluation for the project's renewal, researchers in charge must ensure a mention to the CCCUAM is included in the acknowledgements section of the publications which required computations carried out in the
Center for Scientific Computing. In this sense, although the format is free, the suggested acknoledgement formula can be one of the following ones, or similar:
- We acknowledge the computer resources and assistance provided by Centro de Computación Científica-Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (CCC-UAM).
- The simulations used in this paper have been performed in the Centro de Computación Científica-Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (CCC-UAM); thanks to CPU time and other resources granted by the institution.
Request evaluation criteria on behalf of the Scientific Comission
The evaluation criteria, in order of priority, are the following:
- The main criterion will be the scientific quality and relevance of the proposed project. As to evaluate this, members of the Commission may, if deemed necessary, resort to referees expert in the matter in question.
- Specificity of the project to the Center for Scientific Computing's resources will be evaluated. Henceforth, projects not suited for more conventional computational resources will be prioritized over those who are.
- The requesting team's composition will be evaluated (their researcher in charge's scientific career and the number of researchers participating). Their relation with the UAM will also be taken into account, mainly affecting the
visiting researchers.
- The reasonability of the requested resources with respect to the aimed goals will be evaluated.
- Previous usage of the Center for Scientific Computing's resources by the members of the research team will be evaluated; priority will be given to requests from research groups which have not yet used the Center for Scientific Computing's computational resources. Results and publications from a group's previous projects will also be evaluated. In this case all publications having mentioned the CCCUAM in the acknowledgements section will be specially considered.
The request for additional storage space will be made through e-mail and, upon its approval, will be billed based on the prices approved by the UAM Government council.
